Dear Editor,
"A WORD of warning" to all students.

You have probably been given a word of warning about wo to hang around with, and who to stay away from, but I'm going to give you my two bits anyway. There are many lifestyle groups on Campus, from the Punk Rockers to the high society prissy puss types. These are relatively OK groups, you are your own person with them and can expand and grow.

Unfortunately, there are some groups that play with your mind, and use other such tacics to screw you up. One such group is the "Korean missionaries" [UBF] on Sherbrook [Street]. These people have been barred from campus by Security and Administration (one of the few examples of the use of this barbaric administrative power). Their favourite trick is to approach you on a friendly level and start conversations which eventually leads to a sermon and an invitation to the mission.

This in itself is virtually harmless, if not deceptive and disruptive to the schedule of the student. The real problem is the twisting of biblical scripture, etc., to scare the weaker willed people that they conive in the mission into converting into the True Light.

For those with a lean towards extremist fundamentalist restrictive religion, all is fine. For the other 98.8% of the world this is cultism approaching the finesse of the Moonies. Someone I know once stated that "J.W.'s are more preferable to these ones".

As I have said, for the most part they are harmless, after all they are doing what their warped and twisted Religious Background makes them feel they have to do. They use catch phrases such as "matter of life and death", "Do you know God", as if they phoned God this morning over coffee.

Being rude to them doesn't really help either. For some reason they have the idea that for every time they are abused while preaching, they rack up points for the judgement day. I would like to hear what they did that was so wrong that they feel they have to do this to atone for it. (I know what the answer they'll give for that one already.)

A second group to try to avoid, or call security if you see them, or hassled by them are the intoxicants. These are people who for one reason or another have fallen so low that it is almost impossible for them to be helped. They consume such things as rubbing alcohol and Lysol like you or I might beer at a beer gardens. They live in the streets, stairwells, tents, garbage containers or down in the uttrermost core area.

Again these people are almost harmless, they ask for money, cigarettes, food, anything you can give them. ...... These people have reached the bottom, there are only two ways out for them. Up or death. This is truly a crime, but it is also the truth as I perceive it.

So there are two groups that you as a student, and as an individual person, would do well to stay away from. If you are approched just remain firm and ay, "No". As for any other group on campus, they all have good and points, they all have bad. Use your judgement. Good Luck.
James Douglas.
